Bone Powder Addition and Grafting Surgeries In Turkey
In cases where the jawbone is inadequate for implant treatment, intra-oral grafting procedures are performed. These procedures, also colloquially known as bone powder addition, can be performed with the patient's own bone (autogenous) or can be performed using artificial bone powders. Artificial bone powders can be animal-derived (cattle, hog, horse) human-derived (allogenic), and synthetic. Each has various advantages and disadvantages. In addition, each has different usage areas. For example, usually animal-derived grafts are used in procedures such as sinus lifting, while human-derived grafts are preferred in cases of bone wall deficiencies around the implant.
Can human-derived bone powders cause disease transmission?
Human-derived grafts are obtained from cadavers. The relevant bones are dried, sterilized and thoroughly purified from all kinds of pathogenic microorganisms. Since such grafts are tested scores of times, there is no possibility of disease transmission with these grafts. Moreover, all patients are insured against such possibilities by graft companies.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of autogenous (patient's own bone) bone grafts?
Autogenous bone grafts are taken either from the back of the jaw, called ramus, or from the chin tip area. Autogenous bone is the gold standard in jaw augmentation, i.e. the best option for ossification; however, it has some disadvantages such as the formation of a secondary wound, and a more painful postoperative period.
Autogenous bones are attached to the jawbone using micro screws, which are removed after 4 months. Bone structures obtained with grafting procedure using autogenous bones are much higher quality compared to other grafts.
