Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders In Turkey
The jaw joint called the temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in our body. Although there are many causes of this joint disorder, many different treatment options are available for them. The most characteristic cause of jaw pain is clenching (bruxism) due to psychological factors.
Besides, fillings and prostheses made improperly, and traumas are also the prominent causes of temporomandibular joint diseases. Temporomandibular joint diseases are classified in 3 types: joint diseases due to muscle disorder; due to joint disorder; and due to both muscle and joint disorders.
Bruxism (teeth clenching) and its treatment
The habit of teeth clenching is a completely psychological event that has serious side effects on the teeth, jaw joint and jaw muscles.
In the treatment of this disorder, different techniques are used step by step.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Procedures
In our clinic, manual therapy treatments are effectively performed by our physiotherapist, who specializes in muscle-induced jaw joint disorders.
Occlusal Splint Therapies
It is one of the basic treatment techniques for jaw joint disorders. In this way, the muscle length is extended with intent to relieve the patient by reducing the load on the teeth and joint.
Botox for the Chin
In addition to the above mentioned treatment techniques, Botox treatment provides immediate relief for patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. Although Botox is not an exact treatment option, it is an important adjuvant treatment. Its effect lasts 6-8 months on average. Botox is a kind of bacterial toxin that inhibits muscle activity. Its purpose for bruxism treatment is not to prevent tooth clenching, but to reduce the load and pain on the joint by reducing the muscular tonus.
